VMware vSphere (formerly VMware Infrastructure 4) is VMware's cloud computing virtualization platform.[1]

While developing VMware Infrastructure 3.5, VMware conceived vSphere as an enhanced suite of tools for cloud computing utilizing VMware ESX/ESXi 4.[2]
VMware spun off the cloud computing-enabled tool suite as VMware Infrastructure 4 (VI 4 for short) to be distinct from VMware Infrastructure 3.5 (VI 3.5) that was then ready for release (March 30, 2009).[2]
On April 21, 2009, VMware announced vSphere 4, instead of VI 4, releasing it on May 21, 2009.[2]
On November 19, 2009, VMware released Update 1 for vSphere 4, adding support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.[3]
VMware is using vSphere in the cloud computing platform for virtualization. VMware's vSphere 4.1 began shipping in August 2010. This update included an updated vCenter Configuration Manager, as well as vCenter Application Discovery Manager, and the ability of vMotion to move more than one virtual machine at a time from one host server to another.[citation needed]
On 10 February 2011 VMware released Update 1 for vSphere 4.1 to add support for RHEL 6, RHEL 5.6, SLES 11 SP1 for VMware, Ubuntu 10.10, and Solaris 10 Update 9.[4]

On July 12, 2011, VMware released version 5 of VMware vSphere.[5]
On August 27, 2012, VMware released vSphere 5.1. This extended vSphere to include VMware vSphere Storage Appliance, vSphere Data Protection, vSphere Replication and vShield Endpoint.[6]
September 22, 2013 saw the release of vSphere 5.5.[7]
On May 2014 SAP and VMware announced the availability of SAP HANA for production use on VMware vSphere 5.5 [8]
On February 3, 2015, VMware's CEO Pat Gelsinger announced vSphere 6.0 with a large number of new features and enhancements.[9]
On October 18, 2016, VMware announced vSphere 6.5 focusing on a simplified experience and improving security features.[10]
On April 17, 2018, VMware announced vSphere 6.7 focusing on simple and efficient management at scale, further improved security features, a universal application platform, and seamless hybrid cloud experience.[11]
On October 16th, 2018, VMware announced vSphere 6.7 Update 1. This release is notable for the first fully featured release of the HTML5-based vSphere client.[12]

Vmware Vsphere 6 Download
I have a esxi 6.0 server setup in my lab with 2 physical drives in it.
Datastore1 = 500GB & Datastore2 = 1TB
I am trying to create a new VM with a 2 virtual disks.The 1st vdisk is 20GB and will exist with the vm machine files on Datastore1The 2nd vdisk is 500GB and will be on Datastore2.
If I use the 'old' vSphere thick client with the above detailed configuration it creates the VM exactly as it should. However when trying to create it using the vSphere web client the 2nd vdisk is created on Datastore1 even though Datastore2 is selected as the destination. Likewise if I select to create vdisk1 on Datastore2 and attempt to put vdisk2 on Datastore1 it creates both on Datastore2.
It would seem that it only allowing me to create vdisk's on the same datastore as where the VM machine files are being stored along with the primary vdisk.
I've heard that the 6.0 vSphere web client has some bugs in it, but I can't find anyone else reporting this odd behavior which I find surprising if it were a bug.
Has anyone seen this before or knows if there is a setting I've missed somewhere to allow virtual disks to be created on a different datastore from where the VM machine files & primary vdisk is?

This is definitely a bug because the API allows specifying separate locations for each virtual disks and the virtual machine files.
If you connect directly to an ESXi (located at /ui'>https://<server-hostname-or-ip>/ui) than you are using the ESXi Embedded Host Client. It is distributed as officially supported product and also as a Fling, which is VMware's apps developed by internal engineering teams but not officially supported. The good news is that you could report bugs on the VMware's flings portal at https://labs.vmware.com/flings/esxi-embedded-host-client#bugs
By the way I think this is a known issue reported by others. If you go to https://labs.vmware.com/flings/esxi-embedded-host-client#comments and search for I cannot add disk from a different datastore from where a VMis installed you'll find issue similar to yours.
Considering the issue is fixed you could upgrade your client to the latest Fling. It is distributed as a VIB which you could install on your ESXi.
