Computer problems can stem from all sorts of issues, ranging from a corrupted registry to bloatware. Those two are easily remedied with a PC tune-up utility, but if the malady's source is a missing or outdated hardware or software driver, you need to approach the challenge with a different tool set. Fortunately, SlimWare Utilities has a very competent solution in DriverUpdate, a utility that keeps your PC running smoothly by delivering the latest drivers. DriverUpdate works well, but it isn't quite as well-rounded as the Editors' Choice award-winning IObit Driver Booster Pro.

Pricing and Compatibility

Slimware Utilities offers two versions of the same driver-updating tool: DriverUpdate and SlimDrivers. DriverUpdate, reviewed here, is the premium tier app (starting at $29.97 per year for a single license and topping out at $39.92 for three licenses) that lets you download the latest drivers with just one click and contact professional-level customer service when needed. The free SlimDrivers, on the other hand, gives you community-based support and the ability to download one driver at a time. So, basically, your decision to go paid or free depends on how much you value customer service and a simpler download method.

DriverUpdate is compatible with PCs running the Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, or XP operating systems. Despite working with Microsoft's latest OS, DriverUpdate lacks Ashampoo Driver Updater's deep Windows 10 integration, however. Ashampoo's offering boasts useful alerts that tap Action Center to cause information-filled boxes to slide in and out of view, while DriverUpdate does not.

The DriverUpdate Experience

When you launch DriverUpdate, it performs a quick hardware scan and displays information about your PC's operating system, CPU, GPU, and RAM—just in case you were unsure of your machine's hardware specs. That same window contains a Start Scan button that begins the driver-fetching process when clicked.

In testing, DriverUpdate performed an extremely fast scan (under 10 seconds) on my work PC that unearthed 41 driver-related issues. Both Ashampoo Driver Updater and IObit Driver Booster Pro dug up 44 out-of-date drivers, however.

The interface uses color-coded icons to let you know the status of each driver: red (missing or outdated drivers), yellow (ignored driver updates), and green (up-to-date drivers). Ashampoo Driver Update has a somewhat similar color-coded system, but the color definitions aren't within the application. I had to email an Ashampoo representative to learn that the yellow icon represents a driver that has had an update available for less than 365 days. So, SlimWare Utilities' app is superior to Ashampoo's in that regard.

I like DriverUpdate's handy, at-a-glance read-out window, but not its inability to expand to fullscreen mode, as Ashampoo Driver Updater and IObit Driver Booster Pro can. There's so much to read in terms of driver descriptions that the provided area feels cramped. IObit's tool also lets you apply various skins and transparencies to customize its interface. That's really not in any way a necessary feature, but some might enjoy.

I clicked DriverUpdater's Download All button, and the software prompted me to create a restore point should something go awry with one of the drivers. DriverUpdate then began downloading the appropriate drivers. Afterward, a driver-installation wizard appeared so that I could install them. It took approximately five minutes for me to install all of the new drivers. Once that was complete, I saw a screen stating that all of my drivers were up to date.

I further tested the software by intentionally deleting the Realtek High Definition Audio driver. After I rebooted the PC, DriverUpdate downloaded a replacement driver—Microsoft's 'High Definition Audio Device'—that worked flawlessly when I played back MP3 files and YouTube clips. I similarly deleted several other drivers and DriverUpdate was able to find compatible replacements.

DriverUpdate also has a handy scheduling feature so that you can set a time (either daily or monthly) to check for new drivers. That's a relatively common feature in the category. That said, IObit Driver Booster Pro goes further by letting you prioritize GPU drivers, so that your graphics card is always running at peak performance. If the PC in question is a gaming rig, this is a handy feature.

A Solid Performer

DriverUpdate spares you the potentially laborious task of checking all of your drivers to see if they're up to date—and it makes it quite easy to do so. Both the PC pro and amateur can use this tool to maintain a healthy, functioning PC. Still, Editors' Choice IObit Driver Booster Pro is a better all-around driver-update utility. It uncovered and fixed more out-of-date drivers in my testing, and it boasts a superior interface.
